There was a time when exploring Canada was an actual job.

You packed a camera, a field notebook and enough gear to stay warm, headed into the mountains, and spent the day documenting what was already there.

Alpine Record portrays a winter field survey in the Kluane Range, Yukon Territory, in 1972 — three Northern Mountain Caribou standing above a wind-scoured alpine ridge, Reindeer Lichen exposed between patches of snow, and the mountains disappearing into the winter haze.

No GPS. No digital camera. No uploading it somewhere afterward. Just film, handwritten notes, coordinates and someone willing to stand in the cold long enough to notice what was moving across the ridge.

There’s something beautifully Canadian about that.

A landscape so enormous that three caribou on a distant outcrop could feel like the only living things for miles. Places where roads ended long before the mountains did. And people whose job, sometimes, was simply to go out there and look.

To record where the herds moved. To note what survived beneath the snow. To photograph what might otherwise have passed without witness.

Maybe that’s the part worth remembering.

The innocence of believing the caribou would always cross these ridges. That the lichen would return beneath the melting snow. That beyond the last road there would always be another stretch of wilderness left mostly alone.

And that this beautiful planet wasn’t something we owned.

It was something we were lucky enough to witness.
