There was a time when exploring Canada was an actual job.

You packed a camera, a field notebook and enough gear to stay dry, headed toward the coast, and spent the day documenting what was already there.

Coastal Record portrays an autumn field survey at Grice Bay, British Columbia, in 1974 — a Great Blue Heron standing motionless in the shallows, Pacific Glasswort emerging from the tidal flats, and the mountains disappearing into coastal fog.

No GPS. No digital camera. No uploading it somewhere afterward. Just film, handwritten notes, coordinates and someone willing to stand quietly in cold water long enough to notice what was happening around them.

There’s something beautifully Canadian about that.

A coastline of tidal flats, cedar and spruce, places where the road eventually stopped and the Pacific took over. And people whose job, sometimes, was simply to go out there and look.

To watch the tide come in. To count what returned. To photograph what might otherwise have gone unnoticed.

Maybe that’s the part worth remembering.

The innocence of believing the heron would always be standing somewhere in the shallows. That the tide would retreat and return. That beyond the last road there would always be another stretch of coastline left mostly alone.

And that this beautiful planet wasn’t something we owned.

It was something we were lucky enough to witness.
