Prairie Record portrays a spring field survey near Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, in 1972 — a Mountain Bluebird, Prairie Crocuses and the Rockies still holding onto the last of the winter snow.

No GPS. No digital camera. No uploading it somewhere afterward. Just Kodachrome, handwritten notes, coordinates and someone paying close enough attention to decide this moment was worth recording.

There’s something beautifully Canadian about that.

A country that still felt enormous. Wild places that hadn’t been completely mapped, marketed and optimized. And people whose job, sometimes, was simply to go out there and look.

Maybe that’s the part worth remembering.

The innocence of believing there would always be another spring. Another mountain meadow. Another bluebird returning to the prairie.

And that this beautiful planet wasn’t something we owned.

It was something we were lucky enough to witness.
