There was a time when actual people got paid to document Canada's flora and fauna.

You packed a camera, a field notebook and enough gear for somewhere very far from home, headed north, and spent the summer documenting what was already there.

Arctic Record presents a field survey in what is now Sirmilik National Park, Nunavut, in 1974 — a Snowy Owl among Arctic Poppies, endless tundra stretching toward the Byam Martin mountains that seemed impossibly far away.

No satellite maps. No digital camera. No uploading it somewhere afterward. Just film, handwritten notes, coordinates and someone standing at the edge of an enormous country paying close enough attention to decide this moment was worth recording.

There’s something beautifully Canadian about that.

A country that still felt almost impossibly vast. Places most people would never see. And people whose job, sometimes, was simply to go out there and look.

To count. To photograph. To make notes. To bring back evidence of a beautiful world.

Maybe that’s the part worth remembering.

The innocence of believing these places would always remain this wild. That the owl would return. That the poppies would bloom again when the snow disappeared. That there would always be something left beyond the road.

And that this beautiful planet wasn’t something we owned.

It was something we were lucky enough to experience.
